History:

  • Adelanto was founded in 1915 by E. H. Richardson, the inventor of what became the Hotpoint Electric Iron. He sold his patent and purchased land.  He had planned to develop one of the first master planned communities in Southern California. Richardson subdivided his land into one-acre plots, which he hoped to sell to veterans with respiratory ailments suffered during World War I. He also hoped to build a respiratory hospital. While Richardson never fully realized his dream.  Many fruit orchards were planted in these early years which eventually brought fame to the area for the fresh fruit and cider that were produced here. During the depression era of the 1930s, many orchards were replaced by poultry ranches. With the onset of World War II, the Victorville Army Air Field was created. While not within the city limits, it was nearby and within the sphere of influence. It was renamed for Brigadier General Harold H. George as George Air Force Base in September, 1950. (now closed ) Adelanto became a charter city in November 1992 after being originally incorporated in 1970.
